The collection was formed in 2001. In fact, in the late '90s of the last century, owing to the nature of works of art in that period that were added to the fund of the Art Gallery “Nadežda Petrović” by purchase and donors, there was a need to form a new collection. Art tendencies at the end of the last and at the beginning of this century are totally different from the phenomena that were present on the art scene during the longer period of the second half of the 20th century, so the new works can't represent the whole with other works of art from the collection Yugoslav painting of the second half of the 20th century. Taking into account these facts, as far back as 2000, the professional staff made
a decision for this collection to put into the chronological frame between 1950 and 2000 and for the works of art that would be coming into the Gallery fund, which would be done after 2001, to put in the newly-formed collection named Contemporary Art.
The collection Contemporary Art is, in fact, still in the course of establishing. At the moment, the collection comprises about twenty exhibits that mainly belong to the cathegory of prints, video works and installations, though there are some other art branches (graphics, paintings and some others done in a combined technique).
The collection includes the works that mainly depict psychological, philosophical and socioeconomic views on the contemporary world recast into the new art media and done with contemporary technical- technological means.
The prints done by Oliver Musović and Miodrag Krkobabić should be pointed out from this collection (they are, in fact, real sociological studies of the period of the crisis in the '90s) and the print done by professor Čedomir Vasić as a pure artistic intervention on the reminiscences of a classical work of history of art (painting Gračanica by Nadežda Petrović).
There are ideas and pretensions (so far) for the works of “new views” from the beginning of this century to merge systematically into a unique collection. If need be, it is certain that in future new collections can be formed (transposing the existing ones), that is, if the professionals judge that it is necessary to classify the old collections in another way.
